Abstract

The present study deals with the effects of insecticide, Quinalphos on the acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity of various tissues like gill, liver, kidney and muscle in the freshwater fish, Labeo rohita. Fishes were treated with Quinalphos for 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 10 days and 20 days in water containing sublethal concentrations of Quinalphos (6.06 ppm). The observations indicate that there was decline in acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity of Quinalphos treated tissues in the fish.

Abstract

The plant extract of Tagetus erecta and Cymbopogon citratus were evaluated for ovicidal and repellent activities against Aedes aegypti. The egg hatchability was observed after 24 hour exposure. 100% ovicidal activity was observed at 5.5% and 3.0% respectively. Skin repellent test at 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 mg/cm² concentration gave 100% protection upto 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0 hrs respectively. From the present study it was revealed that extracts from Tagetus erecta and Cymbpogon erecta can be effectively used in the control of Aedes aegypti.

Abstract

Samples of well waters in the area around a paper mill industry situated at Udumalpet, Tamil Nadu were collected and analysed for physicochemical characteristics to assess the water quality during the period of six months of pre-monsoon season (June-November 2008). The data show that the quality of groundwater is grossly polluted and not suitable for drinking and irrigation purposes due to presence of high solids and electrical conductivity.

Abstract

Water quality plays an important role in the survival and distribution of aquatic organisms. It is dependent on physicochemical and nutrient parameters. Studies on the physicochemical characteristics of the Walayar reservoir were carried out for a period of one year from December 2006 to November 2006. The study was performed to determine the pollution status of the reservoir and to implement the measures of pollution control. The parameters analysed include the physical parameters such as temperature, suspended solids, dissolved solids and total solids. The chemical parameters were evaluated such as pH, DO, free CO₂, total alkalinity and nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, Iron, fluoride and chloride. The water quality of the Walayar reservoir was within the safe limits throughout the study period, which shows that this water is fit for utilization for irrigation, domestic purposes and also to support biodiversity.
